Teachers with a passion for success

We are the S (Sarah) and J (Jane) of SJG Tutoring and when we taught together the children knew us as the two Mrs Gs! This is how the name ‘SJG Tutoring’ came into existence.

As colleagues in Year 5 and 6 respectively, we have worked together building a rigorous and inspiring curriculum for Upper Key Stage 2 which was academically challenging and full of wonderful learning opportunities. Since leaving the class room in 2024, we have joined forces, harnessing our years of experience, to form a bespoke 11+ preparation programme. We are uniquely placed to offer students the foundational skills needed for the 11+ and for parents to better understand their child’s potential using our detailed analyses and comprehensive feedback.

BSc (Hons), PGCE, QTS

Before training as a teacher, I worked as a microbiologist on disease-related research with the Medical Research Council in both the UK and Africa. This experience taught me the importance of curiosity, perseverance, and problem-solving—values I now use in teaching, particularly in preparing children for the 11+ exams.

With over 15 years of experience in both state and private primary schools, I am a warm, friendly, compassionate teacher committed to creating a supportive and nurturing environment. I believe every child has the potential to flourish, and I love helping them discover and build on their strengths.

As a Literacy Leader and now a private tutor, I specialise in Primary English and Maths, as well as 11+ and selective school exam preparation. My approach is tailored to each student's individual needs and learning style, aiming to develop academic skills but also to foster a genuine love of learning. Through guidance and encouragement, I help children to embrace new challenges, build confidence and master the skills they need to succeed.

Being a lifelong learner myself, I like to think that my warm and engaging nature helps children feel excited about the limitless possibilities of their own learning. Having taught for 34 years, in London and Kent, I have been fortunate enough to teach the whole primary range.

In the last 20 years of my career, I specialised in years 5 and 6 and became a leading practitioner of maths – a subject which I love! I have administered and invigilated the 11+ for over ten years and have an excellent understanding of this exam and its requirements. I am in a unique position to have observed the children on the day of the test and learn from their approach to the paper and the test itself.

I believe in a personalised learning approach where children’s strengths are celebrated and developed, and any gaps in understanding are addressed positively to build knowledge, confidence and strong foundations.
