Mastering the Tricky Bits
As experienced teachers, we know that there are some aspects of the 11+ test which children consistently find tricky. This is often because either the content has not been introduced within the Year 5 curriculum or it has been covered more simplistically than needed for mastery of a topic. This course covers the bits that children find tricky such as fractions, algebra, spatial reasoning and grammatical constructions.
Our revision courses is tailored to reinforce key concepts and tackle areas of difficulty. Scheduling the course for February, six months before the 11+, ensures enough time to build on these tricky areas further. Parents are informed of any outstanding weaknesses so that these can be addressed before the 11+ tests in September. See current timetable.
Creative Writing
On the day of the 11+ and after the English, maths and reasoning papers have been completed by your child, the final assessment is the writing task. This is a timed test. In recent years, this has gained greater weighting and is looked at first in any Headteacher appeal before further evidence of a child’s writing and academic ability is reviewed. Therefore it is advantageous for children to write with confidence and competence to demonstrate their suitability for a grammar school place. Our course aims to help children secure the requirements needed in the 11+ writing assessment. Children will examine the elements of fiction and non-fiction writing.
Your child will learn how to:
write a balanced argument using well-reasoned points, facts and details
use a structure which is clear and coherent
use effective language and persuasive devices to compose successful arguments
create the essential elements of storytelling through character development, narrative structure and theme
create emotional impact through figurative language techniques
By the end of the course your child will have gained an understanding of their personal strengths and how to tackle the 11+ writing task.
Revision Refresher Course
We know that over the summer holidays children relax into different study patterns and learning routines. Our course is designed to revise ALL aspects of the 11+ and help the children become 11+ ready. We schedule our sessions for three consecutive days in the week preceding a return to school. Over three half-day sessions, your child will revise maths, English (spelling, grammar, punctuation and comprehension) verbal, spatial and non-verbal reasoning. We cannot cover every question type so we have designed our course around the core components of the 11+ and key strategies to aid revision just before returning to school ensuring students are fully prepared
